Whee do eat the hay so whee have cheaper hay as bedding and then yummy soft hay to eat on top of that. Whee like flattening it out to lie down comfortably or dig under it and build little dens and burrows. It is great and whee popcorn with excitement every evening when whee get a handful of fresh hay. Whee prefer it as it is more natural. Whee have tried lots of bedding but this is by far our favourite.

There's not too much I can add as our paths had split many years ago when I went to university. Mike was disabled I suspect as a result of childhood polio (it's funny how you never ask these things at the time) but while it may have slowed him down he never seemed to let it stop him. He would have been in his late thirties or early forties when I first met him in about 1983.

He was an out going character who I remember mainly as a player in some of the long running AD&D campaigns the club ran. While he seemed to prefer RPG he would play anything going. As I mentioned before he was a founder member of the St Anne's Garrison gaming club in King's Lynn, long since gone, but which for a time flew the flag for FRPG and SFRPG in the town.

Sorry there is not a lot more I can add but thank you for the unexpected trip down memory lane. And thanks for following my blog which has a way to go before it can compare with yours!

Thanks! Now I'm hearing conflicting reports on the fleece. We are actually still using shredded paper bedding.

Won't they eat hay bedding? I guess we'll try the fleece & towels and see if it is workable.

Welcome to the ranks of cavy slavery, please leave your pride at the door! No really, whee are glad to see you have got more than one guinea pig, in a big enough enclosure and you know what you are talking about, Such a relief!

As far as bedding goes whee would like to warn that fleece bedding does get smelly very quickly and needs spot cleaning (pooper scooping) three times a day to keep it fresh. Whee live on hay and newspaper with shredded paper bedding which is not only surprisingly cheap when you buy bulk loads of hay but also stay fresher for longer than most other beddings.

Whee look forward to hearing more about your piggies and will be following! Please feel free to stop by our blog if you have any questions or want to see the mischief piggies can get into!

Wow, small world. I'd love to hear anything else you remember about him. I understand he passed away rather young. :( Based on my other informants, it seems likely he was responsible for a fair amount of the rules in FW -- Bruce Galloway was an idea guy and certainly was the ringleader but it sounds like Mike was more knowledgable about gaming.

Well this was unexpected. I knew Mike Hodson-Smith back in the Eighties when we set up a wargames club in King's Lynn. I say we set up, it was really him and a few others who set up the club and I was one of the first members. Mike was a (history?) teacher in a local secondary school (not one that I went to) and was always known for his creative and lively approach to FRPG, in particular AD&D. I had no idea he had contributed to this seemingly seminal work, which I heard about but had never come across. I find it surprising to say the least to come across details about someone I knew 25 or more years ago in darkest Norfolk in a blog penned in the USA. Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?

Wow, loved the reminiscence about Martin Hackett's book which I have sitting on my shelf of more or less classic wargaming works. I did also used to have a copy of the first edition of Warhammer together with its first expansion Forces of Fantasy and you are right that Hackett's book is similar in the sense that it combines both wargaming and FRPG into a more or less generic fantasy setting. I have never managed to use the rules for real as they look a bit "clunky" (I would probably go for HOTT these days simply for speed) but it's strangely reassuring having it on the shelf.
