Aztec & other Mexican

The Revell Aztecs set contains figures suitable for an Aztec army and “close enough” for Mixtecs or Zapotecs (IV/48), Chichimecs, Toltecs (III/58), or Triple Alliance (early IV/63) armies.  The whole army is arrayed here.

In doing some research on the army, I noticed an unusual uniform in the Codex Mendoza, which was adopted from the Huaxtec. It was worn by veterans who had captured two prisoners — such a veteran is called a Cuextecatl.

The conical caps were made of Epoxy putty and secured to their heads by a “pin” of wire. There is a similar uniform in the Osprey book on Aztec armies which is depicted as black with white polka dots and identified as a “Mixtec warrior-priest.”

I later visited Mexico in 2005, and had the luck to be caught in hurricane Wilma, which decided to stop for three days right over the region were vacationing…but I managed to bring back a small model of an Mayan god, whose name I now forget, which became the altar for the temple I scratch built below, to use as the Aztec camp,

Here is a detail, I need to take a better picture of the whole thing.
