Disaster strikes!

OK, maybe not a disaster, but something crappy.  I laminated my CoD map with a clear plastic used to cover book covers in libraries.  I assumed anything good enough for a library would be good enough for this, but it turns out the adhesive on the plastic laminate also dissolves Sharpie ink!  Almost as bad, I used a clear labeller to make some labels for rooms and objects in the CoS/Tomb of the Pharaoh map, and it has had the same effect.  I am trying to decide whether I need to just seal the maps before applying the labels and laminate or just give up on Sharpies and resort to paint (preferably paint markers of some kind.)  I will try  a spray-on sealer and laminate the Tombs map, and see how that works.  I’m a little frustrated but will probably redo both of the maps because in all honesty it doesn’t take all that long to draw and paint them, and I have learned quite a bit in the process.

fadingThe numbers (especially the #3 in the left cell) are showing some fading. That’s ok but I’d hate for the rest of the squares and details to fade away!

  1. Lamination is tough. Praises to you for giving it a try… I’m not that brave.

I’m having a different issue with my game boards… I’m hand painting everything on them and then I’m going to spray varnish the whole thing when I’m done. Sketching typography onto wood isn’t something I’d recommend to anyone… I’m sure it’ll take ten times as long…

I’m not sure what you can do to remove the lamination… you might have to scrap it. Alternatively, you could use it as a back plane and attach another board on top of it. If the lamination has truly glued itself properly, you might have a plastic surface that could receive enamel, spray adhesive, the lettering, and then a final coating of some kind of varnish…

    -S.
