Army of the dwarfs

My brother has always loved dwarves, and built up quite an army. He was never as patient at painting as I am, and ultimately I finished a lot of these, or painted them start to finish in some cases, although back when we were building Warhammer armies there was a certain rivalry and I hated to waste time when I could be painting my own orcs…anyway since then I’ve rebased his dwarves for HOTT/DBx/etc.

Here is the army arrayed (I’d use the Tolkien list for DBA suggested by David Kuijt, or else HOTT — Blades, Blades, Shooters or Spears, and more Blades!)

The backbone of any dwarf army is the axemen, and these are plastic Grenadier dwarves from the Fantasy Warriors game set:

Some have hammers or even cleavers swapped for axes.

Bugman’s Rangers, a Citadel set, supply the crossbowmen for this army, although these guys also have hand axes, battle axes, and shields in addition to their crossbows, which are slung on their backs.

Then there are horde of pikes or spears, Maurauder in front, Grenadier in back:

Some skirmishers and a heavy crossbow team. The leftmost javelin man is Ral Partha, the guy next to him is a TSR gnome, and the rest are classic Grenadier:

And the dwarf general’s HQ, a later Grenadier set by Nick Lund, with a couple of the figures swapped out for other Lund dwarves:

  1. Arhhg,

    • Well, it’s not like you were using them. 🙂

      • Well I will not get much use out of them now!
Seriously most of them look great based as an army. Really when will I ever need a dwarf pike man for a dungeon crawl?

But the grendidier dwarf skirmishers seems wrong. How many hood Tolkien like dwarves do you think I have? Besides dwarves should have artillery not PS

        • Actually when I was taking the pics I decided that the Grenadier dwarves would go back to RPG duty, and probably the dwarf general too (I’ll leave the battle standard up and just put a guys there if/when they give battle.

The crossbow team is artillery, not skirmishers, I see I didn’t explain that.

  2. […] Monaco shows a very serious dwarf. Throw some cool captions to that first picture into his […]

  3. Dwarf Pikemen would be for battles, not dungeons. LOL, who needs pikemen (any race) in a dungeon?

    Spears, yes; Pikes, no.
