Fighting men

A Grenadier archer, a really early Grenadier barbarian, and a Ral Partha paladin.

The barbarian guy has had some damage done to his axe. Years ago I though he’d make a neat Thor figure and I tried to flatten it into a hammer; then later I tried to reform the axe.

One reason I like older editions of D&D is that you could possibly want to make a fighting man who uses a bow. Unlikely in 3rd edition, unless you take all the missile feats (& why not just be a ranger then?), and not going to happen in 4e at all.  But all my AD&D fighters had bows or crossbows in addition to their melee weapons…

I really like all the baggage the paladin has…two axes, a backpack, bed roll, canteen…he’s clearly going into a dungeon, or is traveling.

The left and right guys are Reaper, I think the middle guy is either WotC or Reaper (I got him loose at a con).  The first two make particularly good paladins, IMO.

The guy on the end, with a blue sword, I painted for a specific character who had a frost blade. I went really overboard with highlighting and inks and it looked like it was covered with frost, but when I sealed the figure with brush-on varnish, the ink all ran into the highlighting and it ended up completely uniform. The lesson is if you are going to use Citadel inks, you have to use a spray-on sealer. Fuck.

Come to think of it, like pretty much every other figure that “belonged” to someone else and that I painted, he has somehow become “mine”.

  1. I “dip” my minis into straight Future for step 1 of my varnish. No runs or loss of ink. Then I kill the shine with Mod-Podge.

    • Thanks for the tip! I’ve been using hi-gloss finishes for the extra protection but I should dull them some day too.

Wait a minute — great Googly Moogly! Is that you?!? I think I know how the Fellowship felt when Gandalf the White appeared! Great to see you’re not completely lost to the old blogosphere!

  2. I’ve always liked that Ral Partha Paladin, from the pose to all the gear the guy is ready for some dungeon bashing.
