Flail-snail related update, and an S&D hiatus, and Santa Cruz

(The horror! Swiped from Got medieval; which in turn swiped it from some old book…)

I’ll not be posting anything for a while as I take a much-needed family vacation but in the meantime this is your chance to review some older posts and the fine blogs on my blogroll. Also please check out two blogs devoted to all things Medieval:

Got medieval

and

Per omnia saecula

Got medieval has, among other great things, a series called “mmm..marginalia” which takes a deeper look at illustrations from medieval books. P.O.S. got me with a series on medieval films (movies about the middle ages, not made during the middle ages) and is also one of those blogs with a long and interesting blogroll.

Partisans on either side of the great flail snail debate will appreciate reading about the historical antecedent of the flail snail here.

(Nature’s most perfect knight predator? Or just evidence of glue huffing at the Fiend Factory? You be the judge.)

Also, I’ve scheduled an automatic post to pop up later in the week without my intervention, so we’ll see how that works.

Anyway, any advice on good shops for miniatures, and/or used books, and/or old RPG stuff, in & around Santa Cruz, CA? And/or Monterey? I’ll be in that area part of next week.

  1. Have a great vacation, Mike. And just so you know, flail-snails are a serious issue. My wife’s parents own a small nursery, and they had to kill something like 600 snails (of the ordinary variety) last weekend. Imagine if each had been carrying a headful of morning stars! Scary stuff…

  2. Seems like there’d be at least one decent gaming shop with the University there in Santa Cruz eh? Have a great trip, love the area. There’s Game-A-Lot at 835 Front Street there, but I wasn’t gaming when I lived there a number of years ago (if it was even there then) and can’t vouch for it. Shouldn’t be out of your way if you go “downtown” at all though.

    • Managed to check out three places of interest —

“Atlantis Fantasyland” — a comic book shop with some neat old comics and pulps but mostly just a comics store; “Logos” — a huge bookstore with an unimaginably vast collection of used sci-fi & fantasy paperbacks (I got four Poul Anderson books I’d been looking for) and, in Scotts Valley, “Epic Adventures” — a FLGS which actually was pretty friendly. I was tempted by some used older games but didn’t buy anything. We saw “Game-a-lot” as were were leaving Santa Cruz one night but I had just got the Anderson books and didn’t stop.

      Mike
