Lucy Clifford, WTF?

It’s not often that I’m shocked by anything I read, particularly with fiction.  I have a strong stomach and morbid sense of humor most of the time, although I have to admit that fatherhood has made me eerily emotional at times.

So when I read a story (in the anthology Masterpieces of fantasy and enchantment, compiled by David G. Hartwell) by Lucy Clifford, called “The new mother,” I was surprised to find myself shocked as sh1t.

You can read it here in a collection of her stories, which I’ll be looking at some day.

I mean, I knew she was a Victorian writer going into this, but seriously this about the Grimmest children’s story ever, and even more shocking for an adult/parent.  Especially in light of the fact the story was not just published in a children’s magazine but written for her own children.

There is no gore, no sex, or anything unsuitable for children except (spoiler below, read the story first!)

the of callous abandonment of children by their apparently loving mother, and her replacement by a freaking monster.
