Stripping figures with Simple Green

No pics in this post but I finally tried “Simple Green” as suggested by Cyclopeatron and it wow.  The stuff is even better than Pine-Sol.  It is even more effective at making the paint sort of become re-plasticized and it scrubs off with a toothbrush and none of the wretched scraping and picking with toothpicks.  Several figures that were on there third or fourth Pine-Sol treatment to little avail came completely clean in the Simple Green. Figures that were only treated in Simple Green came completely clean in one soak.  You still want to scrub with a toothbrush but it is really night and day compared to Pine-Sol.  For s&g’s I tried “Goof Off” too, which was pretty effective (I could see the paint bubbling as soon as a figure was submerged!) but that stuff is like alkahest and will dissolve linoleum.  Simple Green seems to be fairly non-toxic, based on the label, but it did see this pointed out on the Ral Partha Yahoo group. (It sounds like you don’t want to swim in the stuff, but I think reasonable precautions should make a few minutes of handling it OK.)  It is also biodegradable, which is nice.

  1. From everything I’ve been told, Simple Green works on everything but those horrid plastic D&D minis put out by Wizards of the Coast.

  2. Cool!

  3. Good to know! Thanks for posting a comparison.

  4. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

  5. I keep forgetting to give this a try but your blog reminded me and now I have some ready to go. I’ll post my own results after some testing. Thanks!
