Congratulations to Ken St. Andre on his retirement

Ken St. Andre, creator of Tunnels & Trolls, recently announced (via Twitter) his retirement from public librarianship after 36 years.  Congratulations, Ken! Enjoy it!

Ken has descended from his jeweled throne at  Trollhalla on occasion to leave remarks my own humble blog.

I think I have about 25 more years at my job before I’d be eligible for retirement (assuming I stay at it, and the state public employees retirees system remains solvent, and…).

On a related note, anyone who has not heard about the Outlaw Press fiasco should see Ken’s open letter to James Shipman (of Outlaw Press), reposted at the Other Side Blog here.  I’ll add that the “history” and revisions of the entry on Tunnels & Trolls at Wikipedia are fascinating in a train-wreck kind of way — it looks like Mr. Shipman has been revising the page to give himself and his company a starring role in T&T‘s history, and Wikipedia has had to lock the article, a precaution normally reserved for articles on living politicians and controversial topics like abortion.

Anyway here’s hoping the whole thing blows over and Mr. Shipman respects Ken’s wishes regarding his work.

  1. Chello!

How “Big Brother” of him to rewrite history for Ken (Orwell, not CBS, of course).

  2. Thank you for the congrats, Mike. Retirement is a mixed blessing. Re: the open letter, Mr. Shipman has already retaliated by threatening to sue Mark Reed of Heroic Journey publishing if he publishes my Rose of Stormgaard novel, claiming that he has a part interest in the book. (Actually, I’m not sure what his claim is, but Shipman has in the last few months threatened a copyright suit toward several people and companies who wished to reclaim works they had originally let him publish through Outlaw Press. His tactic has been working because no one wants a law-suit.) I believe his lies, threats, trickery, and other manipulations will backfire on him sooner or later.

  3. Wait a sec–the Ken St. Andre who’s in the American Libraries sitting on my desk is the same guy who wrote T&T?

Holy cow. My day has been MADE.
