The Game of Life

Are you kidding me?

The Game of Life beat out Dungeons & Dragons and chess for the toy hall of fame this year.

(Thanks to the fine RPGII blog for alerting us first!)

Now technically of course chess is, according to the DSM IV, a mental illness and not a game, but even so… The Game of Life? Really? Played it once in my grandparents’ basement when me, my siblings, and cousins were banished to find a game to play instead of “rough housing” upstairs or in the yard.  According to the press release:

Criteria for induction include: icon-status (the toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered), longevity, discovery (the toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play), and innovation.

Come on, people.  I guess Life is older than D&D (but not older than chess, obviously).  I suppose it’s a generational thing or something.  More people have no doubt played Life, although I doubt you learn or discover much through it, and certainly even chess has more room for creativity, let alone D&D.

Grumble.

  1. I’m not sure why D&D isn’t in the game hall of fame. It seems to meet all of the criteria that you mentioned.

  2. I’m curious how the Hall of Fame decision makers view what we call ‘D&D’… do they see Basic D&D as a ‘different game’ than AD&D or Third Edition?

…still wondering about classifications and legal definitions when it comes to that kind of thing and how it relates to licenses and such.

In any case, I’m not counting on any version making it into the Hall of Fame until the last remaining ex-TSR staffer is gone.
