So tell me about Warlock

“At Caltech in Pasadena, students Cowan, Clark, Shih, Smith, Dahl and Peterson put together a set of rules with what they felt to be an improved combat and magic system: Warlock. I used their combat table when I first began playing D & D”John Eric Homes, Fantasy Role Playing Games, p. 65.

Was this ever published? Has anyone seen this?  Inquiring minds want to know.

  1. Warlock was indeed published, in several formats, during the late 1970s. It’s basically a D&D variant, similar in many ways to Arduin. Copies of it are hard to find and expensive when they do show up. I have a copy of one version of the game and it’s interesting, though definitely not something I’d be interested in playing straight, due to its complexity in places.

    • Yeah, the version I found online is very long and mostly dated from the last decade. It’d be interesting to see the original rules Holmes mentions — I’m assuming, rightly or wrongly, they are not as complicated as the current version.

  2. What’s your e-mail address? I might be able to provide you with some helpful information. Mine is above, feel free to contact me via g-mail.

  3. Hmm … apparently my e-mail address did not show, I thought it would. You can e-mail 18Spears at gmail period com.

    • Thanks!

  4. Sounds like the doc someone recently posted a link to on the OD&D boards:

    http://addsecondaedizione.blogspot.com/2010/11/complete-warlock-available-for-download.html

    • Thanks man!
It looks like it is a “living document” — that’s like 300 pages+. I suppose the bits Holmes used could still be in there.

  5. Well it appears the link has come and gone again. Right now it appears the only way to get it is to sign up for the yahoo group

    http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Warlock-D_and_D

Theres alternate website listed but the links are broken.

  6. nowadays i’m muc more interested in this:

(which was another alternative to D&D from the past)
