Dungeon dressing: Barrels and pots

These are all made from wooden beads I picked up at a dollar store several years ago.

The barrels were really easy — I just painted them brown and black.

The pots took a little more effort.  I glued them onto pennies.

I painted simple designs on some.  One I left it’s original color and used as part of a treasure pile (glitter for coins and various bits added as magic items).

I’d like to place barrels and pots randomly around the dungeon sort of like the Diablo computer game — you can ignore them or stop and check them, and they could have treasure, traps, or monsters hiding in them.  Anyone have some ideas for what should on the d30 “you broke a barrel” chart?

My players are already assuming every chest may be a mimic though, and I haven’t even used one yet, but I guess it’s a comment that maybe Telengard is getting a little too funhousey.

I also have one of the two little pots that came in the Grenadier Wizard’s Room set.

  1. Those are GREAT! Just stumbled upon those little wooden “pickle barrels” this week at the craft store! Now I’ll have to go back to find the vases!

  2. Re: broken barrel… I don’t have a d30 chart in me at the moment, but for sure the Rusty Battle Axe’s Beer Ooze would be on it.

  3. There’s always this chart over at Telecanter’s blog: http://recedingrules.blogspot.com/2010/09/whats-in-urns.html

    • Thanks, man! I forgot about that post. Great ideas.

  4. Love ’em! Foolishly, I bought some pre-painted barrels and urns from Dwarven Forge for an arm and a leg. Doh!!!

  5. wow. Those are great, I’m going to have to whip some up stealing your methods! Rad!

Some things for inside pots: chickens (stealing from Zelda), another pot (& another & another), a Beer ooze (whatever that might be!), key for a locked door…you could put anything inside one. Or, you could have the artwork on the pot itself be a map to the current dungeon level, a clue, a spell scroll.

  6. […] that are trapped are sprung on a 1-4.   Some of these ideas are stolen from suggestions here and here, and others are stolen from computer games like Diablo. Wait! Don't smash them […]
