Speaking of new gamers and women gamers and gamer shame

D&D with Porn Stars just started a round table of women gamers about women in gaming.  Several other blogs recently had their “gamer shame” posts (in fact I had another one in the works too but lost interest). And we’re all about getting new players involved, right?  So someone kind of hit the trifecta on these topics.  I just stumbled on this blog: Life with a D&D man.  It’s just started but should be interesting.  The author is writing about overcoming her own and others’ prejudices as she develops a serious relationship with a gamer…and even plays her first D&D game. Check it out.

  1. The female gamer roundtable looks interesting. Must finish it after work. The other blog though, I think it represents the elements I despise in women “gamers.” Reading it, it seems like she expects (almost demands!) that folks react to it in either an extremely positive or negative way.

  2. I guess I’ve been blessed. I never took any crap for being a D&D player when I was a high-schooler back in the 1970’s, and my teenagers don’t get any grief for being RPGers today. I’ve caught occasional flack from cow-workers over the years (always when the cow-worker has an audience to “play to”), but my usual reply is something like: “I’d invite you to try one out, but being as you don’t have two brain cells to rub together I doubt you’d be any good at them.” Nineteen times out of twenty, the subject of RPGs never, ever comes up again…

    • I don’t know if cow-worker is a typo or neologism. You use it twice so I’m guessing it’s intentional. Consider it stolen!
