HPL’s “commonplace book”

Bruce Sterling’s blog over at Wired.com has what I think is the complete text of H.P. Lovecraft’s “commonplace book” here.  (It’s more of a notebook of ideas for stories than a traditional ‘commonplace book’ which would have collected quotations and similar.) You won’t find a single ‘tentacle’ in the batch, fwiw.  But you could certainly steal some of the ideas for your own weird gaming.

For the scholars, there’s some annotations here, with sources and where he used some of them.

  1. That is a super find. They read like campaign jottings. It might be possible to fit the numbered notes to a hex map.

  2. +1 to Kent’s idea. Those little notations are pure gold.

  3. Cool, thanks for the link. I own Strange Shadows, which is a similar collection of essays, poem fragments, notes and random thoughts that Clark Ashton Smith journaled over the years. Looking over Lovecraft’s Commonplace Book and Smith’s Strange Shadows offers a glimpse into the way these men imagined and the way they created. Fascinating stuff!

    • Wow, i’ll look that up. CAS’s notes would likely be even more gameable!

      • Yes, Strange Shadows is chocked full of inspiration. The only downside, the price… I still cant believe I spent over $50!

        • Yeah, I’ve a bit about the Smith estate being pretty um, tightfisted with his works, and not really doing a good job of getting him in print so people can actually read him. But I’ll see what I can get through interlibrary loan.
