Do check out Mesmerized by Sirens

It’s a newish blog but already has some neat stuff, especially if you are into paleo-gaming and forgotten or obscure RPGs.  Das Schwarzte Auge* for the win!

*Das Schwartze Auge is only obscure in America, I think.  It was (is?) apparently huge in Germany.

  1. Excellent resource, thanks for posting this! I love the old-style artwork exhibited..

  2. Yes, Das Schwarze Auge is still big in Germany, but not as big as it was ten-twenty years ago. But it is still outselling D&D because D&D4 failed spectacularly on the German market.

Right now DSA is in a situation similar to when TSR folded and WotC stepped in. The rights have been transferred to a new publisher (Ulisses) and most of the original editorial team (and writers) has left the game.
It is a huge topic in the German gaming community whether Ulisses can pull a “3e” kind of stunt – a system re-design (which would be DSA5) that takes back the lost ground. But there ends the comparison because the success of DSA was never grounded in the rules system but rather in the campaign setting, Aventuria, with its “living history”. Now that nearly all of the persons who had internalized the 35+ years of metaplot are gone chances are not so good that a DSA5 will be consistent with the DSA the people liked.
There’s speculation if this will lead to a Pathfinder-like schism in the DSA community. A great many of the writers flocked to Myranor, which is an official spin-off of Aventurian DSA (Myranor is a second continent on the same world) but licensed to a different publisher…

The funny thing is that Ulisses is also the German publisher of Pathfinder.

  3. Thanks Mike, i hadn’t noticed this post of yours until today…
And by the way, we have in common our love for Fantasy Wargaming, maybe one day i’ll talk about that. One of the best (and forgotten) fantasy RPG ever.

    bye
