Ice trolls

Dennis Mize did some amazing sculpts back in the later 70s/early 80s. These trolls are from the Children of the night line.  I have to admit I’m not a fan of Mize’s later work, especially for the Personalities line in the 1990s and the AD&D line.  Those monsters are still nice but the humans look awful, IMO.  Big stupid hair and stiff poses.

Anyway my original two trolls were supplemented by several donations to the Galloway Memorial Home (thanks Khazan!), and I decided to strip them all and repaint them as ice trolls.

I think the simple layers of drybrushing show off the excellent detail of these rangey ape-like trolls.  The next picture with the flash turned on gives a better sense of their blue & white coloring.

  1. I painted up one of these a little while back to fit in with my existing trolls. I always wondered where I had got it from and if they were still available. I may trawl the interweb to see if I can a few more. I really like the paint-job you have given them – I’ve always liked snow themed critters.

  2. Those look great!

I hit those links… I didn’t know the Mize did the Cyclops!

    • I actually thought both the whole children of the night line was sculpted by Tom Meier, not Mize. I now have a lot more respect for Mize’s work. I was only aware of him in the 90s, with all those minis with long, thin torsos and mall hair….the trolls are kind of thin-torsoed too but it works for them.

      • I like the monster work, but the human figures are really stiff. Back then, though, a detailed figured probably would’ve stood out more. The pose and detail quality of most figures these days is easy to take for granted.

  3. The Cyclops looks awesome.
Ice trolls are a great idea for Rp trolls which are little small when used with newer models

    • Yeah…I seem to be about 2 years behind on painting minis for the campaigns you run. But good news, Mr. Magic is done. I did not do the rainbow color scheme you requested though…I have a feeling the 5DM campaign is not going to to be a 30+ session thing…

      • I have the same feeling.
I keep thinking I have time to DM but I don’t.
