A kickstarter project I have no interest in

But maybe you do.  If so, kick in some support.

A game designer in my area is working on what he describes as a complete steampunk setting for  PFRPG (i.e. Pathfinder), called Pure Steam.

Now I for one never really got into the whole steampunk fad, although I kind of liked the idea behind the Space:1899 game.  And I found D&D 3e to be ponderous and munchkiny, and from what I’ve seen of Pathfinder I don’t think they really correct that.  So I would seriously never buy or play a steampunk Pathfinder game.  But just in case you have not heard of this and would, here’s the kickstarter link to the project, with some nice art and further details.  They are more than 1/3 funded so this could happen.

  1. Can we have extra ‘Steam’ without the ‘Punk’?

  2. I like the part of steampunk that gives us clockwork spiders and vast sooty manufactory cities, but not the part that gives us sideburns and goggles and people gluing cogs to their boots.

  3. Therein lies the rub…no one seems to do steam-powered sci-fi without mixing in Trent Reznor’s version of Victorian style…which I guess was cool 20+ years ago but now it’s even stale in Japan, if you know what I mean. Best of luck to them, though — I’m a good 30 years behind…

    • Too true… thankfully clockwork spiders were, are, and will always be cool!

  4. I just looked at the ‘FAQ’ at the kickstarter site, and the fifth question is — Are there rules for ‘anthropomorphic animal/human heroes’?

I wanted to ask: Seriously, that’s a frequently asked question? ‘Can I be a furry?’ I had no idea that was part of the pure steampunk aesthetic.

To the credit of the game designers, they politely mention that you can incorporate other PF-compatible rules but there are no new races in the core book.

  5. Reblogged this on OUBLIETTE and commented:
    pure steam
