Continuing the 30 days of D&D questions, today’s question is who is your favorite deity?
If we’re talking about the pantheons of real world mythology, it’s got to be Thor.
What’s not to love about the angry, gluttonous, easily-duped, but oh-so-terrifying defender of mankind against the giants? I loved reading about his adventures with Loki in the D’Aulaires’ book on Norse mythology as a kid and that more or less got me going down the path to D&D. Really the whole Norse pantheon is pretty awesome.
If, on the other hand, we’re talking about the made-up-for-D&D deities, I’d be hard pressed to even name most of the ‘official’ gods of Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms, and whatever 3rd edition’s game world was. I can recognize some of them when I see their names but they were always pretty generic IMO. I liked the nonhuman’s deities a little more, especially Gruumsh, the god of the orcs who combines some aspects of Odin (spear, one eye, loves war) with the underdog goofiness of D&D orcs. It’s also nice that his symbol is an eye, so all your Middle-Earth orc miniatures with the eye of Sauron on their shields are ret-coned into the D&D world. But really the best part about Gruumsh is the propaganda war between the orcs and elves about how Gruumsh lost his eye. (The DDG illustration by Jeff Dee does not really suggest he ever had two eyes though…that story must be BS!)
