Favorite edition

Ooo, a Sophie’s choice kind of question.  I guess AD&D 1e will always be my ‘favorite’ edition in the sense that I played it the most and learned to play with it.  I only came around to seeing how great B/X was later, and I think if I had to pick a version to play by-the-book it would be B/X (although playing ‘rules a s written’ kind of goes against the spirit of B/X).  When I’m being objective, I have to admit that 2e had some real improvements to the game. It’s just the art, book design, writing, omissions of classes and races, and renaming of monsters that bother me about 2e.  Kits look like a way better idea in hindsight and in contrast to feats, builds, and all the other alternatives offered in 3e and 4e.  If I had the 2e books i might even try that for the next campaign I run.

Of the knock-offs, retroclones, and OGL rip-offs of D&D, the two I like the most are Lamentations of the Flame Princess: Weird Fantasy (because it is fairly well-thought out revision of B/X set in the Renaissance with a horror spin) and Labyrinth Lord Advanced Edition Companion (as it mixes B/X and 1e).  There are others I haven’t actually looked at though so I can’t say I have too informed an opinion there.  I have tried really hard to like Castles & Crusades, but as a DM it’s just not as adaptable as I’d like — like 3e, it is too tightly designed to really house-rule without breaking things.  My current campaign has really suffered from this — I keep trying to change one thing here and find it messes up stuff over there…  So I like C&C more than 3e but that is not saying much.

I’m somewhat optimistic about “D&D Next” or whatever they end up calling 5e, but based on the little I’ve seen, I don’t know where they’re really going with it.

So, I guess my favorite edition is 1e, followed very closely by B/X.
