Werestuff part 4: I wanna be a were

I wanna be a were!

So now that you know a little more about werewolves and lycanthropy, how can you become one?  Folklore has a lot of stranger ways of becoming a werewolf than just being bitten by one.  (Indeed Baring-Gould makes no mention whatever of the curse being transmittable by bite.)  Here are some options:

  1. Trolls, and those enchanted by trolls, may become weres.

  2. Those who anger the Devil may be cursed by him with lycanthropy.

  3. Drinking water from a wolf’s footprint in the clay or mud will turn you into a werewolf.

  4. A special belt, three fingers wide and made of human skin, will turn you into a werewolf.   You can probably get one from a witch or devil.

  5. Walking over the threshold of a home that has been strewn with a wolf-belt will turn you into a wolf for seven days.  This happened to an entire wedding party once.

  6. There is also a special salve or ointment to turn you into a wolf.  You have to get these from a witch or a devil.  Some know purveyors of werewolf salve are the witch Moyset, his master Guillemin (a “black rider”), and a mysterious black man who calls himself “The Lord of the Forest.”  These guys all usually offer money or protection to anyone who will accept and use the salve, though they will drag you into their Satanic rites in the long run.

  7. Certain pools or fountains in France will turn you into a wolf and back again into a human.

  8. Blaspheming, or being excommunicated, can turn one into a wolf, a dog, or a human-headed dog.

  9. The damned sometimes turn into wolves after death, digging themselves out of their graves.

  10. There is also a special incantation that be said, in the forest, to turn one into a werewolf.  Baring-Gould gives the entire set of instructions.

A wolf-man…the werewolves of folklore were not humanoids, but just big ravenous wolves. Still it’s a cool figure.
