Good news!

Congress has been so effective at getting things done and solving problems that they can focus on telling librarians how to do their jobs!

So when the Library of Congress Policy & Standards Division decided that “Illegal aliens” was not a useful and objective term for use in subject headings (with good reason), Repugnant congressmen raced to compose a bill that would undo their deliberations. For some reason every other PSD decision made that week was fine, but this one change demands action from our normally sessile representatives.

What next, a Senate hearing to investigate subversive call numbers? (“Why is Islam listed before Christianity? Why is the Bible filed under BS?“) A Supreme Court ruling on permissible story time books? Maybe we need a congressional oversight of reference librarians to make sure every question is screened by the Heritage Foundation.

FFS, man.

Quit your bitching about the 5e playtest; please redirect your nerdrage against CISPA

Thanks to Big Rich for reminding me that this legislation is still under consideration.

Tell your senators to kill this bill.  There is no need for such an invasive law.  Privacy matters even if you have nothing to hide.

Thanks!

Never forget … that I’m an idiot

I’m not qualified or self-important enough to think I can explain the significance of today’s “anniversary.”  I can’t offer deep solace or draw lessons.  In fact I kind of hate hearing 9/11 re-hashed except maybe by first responders and people who were in the WTC, or the Pentagon, or NYC, or who lost someone then, because so many people seem to have hitched on, lamprey-like, to claim some personal aggrandizement in the guise of anger, concern, sorrow, etc.  9/11 has become such a political tool that I’d rather not hear about it at all. (potentially offensive image and discussion below the ‘more’ line) (more…)

This is relevant, sort of

I’m not one to shy away from gratuitously political posts, but that is not the point of this post. here’s something that is also very tangentially related to dorkery —more sides than a bag of polyhedral dice!  I am very tickled that a journalist anywhere would throw that line out in the first paragraph.  A new one to me.  I will resist commenting on the Bachmanns as best as I can, even though they seem to be trying harder than anyone else to be complete caricatures of know-nothing Tea Carpetbagger fundaterrorist tardines.  I mean, I think the Palins must joke about what a pair of tools those jokers are.

OK, could not resist; failed within the same sentence.  Sorry.

Where was I? … polyhedrals.  Nice.

Also, I may as well point out The Journal of Are You Fucking Kidding, a blog where the use and abuse of science is mocked.  Some political content there too.  Sorry.
